Playa del Carmen–Cozumel Ferry: a one-way crossing in your chosen direction

One ticket for travel between two terminals

The ferry links Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal with Cozumel. Its purpose is to carry passengers from one port to the other, not to provide a guided excursion. Hotel pickup, food, drinks, snorkeling, Cozumel activities and land transportation after arrival are not included. Arrange those elements separately.

Two one-way products are enabled: Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. Choose the one matching your actual origin. A return journey requires two individual tickets, each with its own direction and fare. Seeing both in the cart reduces the chance of reaching the island with only the outbound crossing.

Reviewing origin and destination

When starting on the mainland, the ticket should name Playa del Carmen as origin and Cozumel as destination. When already on the island, choose Cozumel as origin. Check before payment; the fact that sailings exist both ways does not make a reversed product interchangeable.

For a group, verify that everyone shares the same direction, date and passenger categories. Fares, taxes and conditions can vary by direction, so do not calculate the return by simply doubling the outbound amount. Label each receipt clearly, especially when the dates differ.

Departing from Playa del Carmen

Boarding for Cozumel takes place at Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. The surrounding area is busy, and arrival time depends on accommodation, parking and transport choice. The ferry ticket begins at the terminal; it does not include a land journey from Cancún, the Riviera Maya or a hotel.

Arrive 30 minutes before the sailing you want to board. Use the margin to locate the terminal, show the ticket and organize luggage. Allow more time for any piece that must be checked. Capacity remains limited: early arrival is necessary, but it does not reserve a place on a sailing that has already filled.

Returning from Cozumel

For the mainland return, report to the terminal stated on the Cozumel-to-Playa del Carmen ticket. Confirm the pier and Xailing queue; being elsewhere in the port area does not equal being at the correct boarding point. Keep the receipt downloaded and easy to show.

Calculate travel time from the final activity to the terminal. Cozumel has its own distances and traffic, and an independently arranged beach visit, dive or tour may finish far from the port. Leave time to return rental equipment or a vehicle, travel to town and walk to the entrance. Avoid depending on the last crossing compatible with another commitment.

Open-ticket validity

The ferry ticket remains valid for six months from the selected date if a change is needed. Under its conditions, it may be used for an available departure, but it does not hold capacity on every sailing. Purchased route, direction and passenger category remain applicable throughout the validity period.

Saving the ticket is only one part of changing plans. Review current rules before using it on another date and check departures near the journey. “Open” does not mean interchangeable between directions, valid for any traveler or usable from a different terminal.

Departures, weather and port authority

Published departures are subject to weather and operating capacity. During bad weather, the port authority determines whether navigation is safe. Consult current sailings rather than relying on an old screenshot or general list. No fixed timetable should be treated as permanent.

Allow generous time when connecting to a flight, excursion or strict appointment. A crossing may fill, be delayed or change. Maritime safety takes priority over personal connections, and holding a ticket does not remove that possibility.

Included services during the crossing

The transfer includes traveler insurance, WiFi and restrooms. A pet area, luggage section and designated seats and spaces for guests with disabilities are also provided. These are vessel services, not a tourism package or a promise of individualized help on land.

Download the ticket before arrival because WiFi performance can vary. Keep documents, medicine, keys and delicate belongings with you. Place other luggage where the crew directs and avoid blocking aisles. Follow current instructions even if you have traveled the route before.

Accessibility and mobility needs

Accessible vessels and designated spaces provide a useful basis, while ramps, level changes, queues and terminal conditions also affect the journey. Guests needing assistance should ask in advance how boarding works in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Describe wheelchairs, walkers or other equipment to receive relevant information.

Arrive earlier when the group needs support. Crew determines the safest time and method for boarding. A companion can help manage belongings while mobility is addressed, but restricted areas and staff directions still apply.

Minors, luggage and pets

Travelers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Adult and child categories and their taxes appear according to the selected product. Do not assume an infant or child rides free unless the current breakdown says so. Register every passenger accurately.

A luggage section does not guarantee acceptance of every item. Ask about oversized, sporting, fragile or unusual pieces. Pet travelers should confirm carrier, documentation and onboard rules. A dedicated area does not mean every animal can board without requirements.

Staying comfortable onboard

Wear comfortable clothing and bring a hat and sun protection. Store a phone and documents in a splash-resistant case. Guests arriving from the beach with wet or sandy clothes should use outside spaces as directed. Remain seated during the crossing and keep circulation areas clear.

Anyone sensitive to vessel movement should prepare before arrival. Ask a health professional about appropriate options and avoid trying an unfamiliar product without guidance. Eat and hydrate according to personal needs, remembering that meals and drinks are not included with the ticket.

Planning the day in Cozumel

After disembarking, the schedule is yours. Treat transportation, meals and activities as separate arrangements. When booking a land or water activity, tell its provider how much margin you need to reach the ferry. Approximate crossing time does not include waiting, boarding or island transportation.

Ticket flexibility is not unlimited time. You must return to the terminal while departures are operating and space is available. For an overnight stay, keep the return ticket separate from the outbound receipt and check operations again on the appropriate date.

Scenic Tower benefit

Ferry information links the ticket with access to the Scenic Tower in Cancún when the receipt is presented. Public sources are not consistent about the exact use period. Keep the ticket and follow the validity shown for the purchase before traveling to Cancún's Hotel Zone.

The tower is in Cancún, not at the Playa del Carmen or Cozumel terminals. Access does not provide transportation to it. Treat this as a separate benefit rather than part of the crossing or the island itinerary.

Ferry compared with an excursion

The ferry works for travelers designing their own day, visiting someone, staying in Cozumel or connecting with a separately purchased activity. It provides maritime transportation while the rest remains under your control, subject to sailing operations.

An excursion may include a guide, equipment, meals or land transportation, but it also follows its own itinerary. The ferry includes none of those services. Compare the actual need rather than only the destination name; reaching Cozumel and touring Cozumel are separate decisions.

Final verification

Before payment, check direction, date, adults, children, taxes and terminal. If returning, confirm a second Cozumel-to-Playa del Carmen ticket. Download both receipts, check current sailings and arrive 30 minutes early.

Clarify mobility needs, unusual luggage or pet requirements in advance. Arrange transportation to the departure terminal and from the arrival port separately. With those checks complete, the ferry serves as a flexible maritime connection, not an excursion or a reserved seat on every departure.
