Xailing Catamaran to Isla Mujeres: compare Light and Prime

Sailing, snorkeling and independent island time

The Xailing catamaran tour links Cancún and Isla Mujeres through a day of sailing, onboard music, a snorkeling activity at El Meco reef and free time in the island's center. It is not a direct passenger ferry. This is an excursion lasting approximately six to seven hours, with food and service varying by the selected option.

The product family has two service levels, Light and Prime, and each may be offered with hotel transportation or without it. First choose the experience, then decide how you will reach the marina. Both decisions should appear in the booking summary so an option beginning at the dock is not mistaken for one that includes pickup.

What Catamaran Light includes

Light includes round-trip catamaran sailing from Cancún, snorkeling at El Meco, a box lunch, premium drinks onboard, fruit and cookies, plus independent time on Isla Mujeres. Scenic Tower access is also listed. The return from the island may use a ferry or catamaran according to operations, so the same vessel should not be promised in both directions.

The box lunch is Light's principal meal. It does not include the beach club, buffet and beverage service that distinguish Prime. Light may suit travelers who want a simple meal and more emphasis on exploring the island independently. Anyone expecting a buffet at a beach club should select Prime and verify the product name before payment.

How Catamaran Prime differs

Prime retains the catamaran, El Meco snorkeling, premium onboard drinks, fruit, cookies, island free time and Scenic Tower access. Instead of a box lunch, it adds admission to a beach club with buffet food and beverages. That organized club visit becomes part of the day's structure and should be considered when thinking about fully independent island time.

Prime is useful when the group values a buffet and a set place to eat before exploring the center. Light keeps food service simpler. Neither option turns the free period into a guided land tour or automatically includes shopping, golf-cart rental, taxis or activities arranged separately on Isla Mujeres.

Departing from El Embarcadero

The tour leaves from El Embarcadero de Xcaret at km 4.5 in Cancún's Hotel Zone. Guests without transportation must make their own way there. Parking is available at an additional charge. Allow for Hotel Zone traffic and enough time to find the ticket area, present identification and complete check-in.

The Light page lists an 8:30 a.m. check-in for a 9:00 a.m. start and an 11:30 a.m. check-in for a noon start. Prime lists 8:30 a.m. check-in and a 9:00 a.m. start. These are published option times; follow the time confirmed for the selected product and date, and never transfer one option's schedule to another.

Hotel transportation is a separate choice

Hotel pickup applies only when it is added to the reservation. Without transportation, guests report directly to El Embarcadero. If pickup is included, its time depends on the accommodation and occurs before marina check-in. Do not use the catamaran's departure time as the time to wait in a hotel lobby.

The return hotel transfer likewise belongs only to a transportation-inclusive option. Confirm the drop-off point and leave room for traffic and routing. If you change hotels, ask for updated instructions rather than assuming every Cancún or Riviera Maya property uses the same service.

Clear requirements for snorkeling at El Meco

Snorkeling participants must be at least 8 years old, know how to swim and, when minors, be accompanied by an adult. A life jacket is mandatory. These are activity-specific requirements: a guest may be able to join the sailing and enjoy the island without qualifying to enter the snorkeling activity.

Snorkeling depends on weather and sea conditions. The crew can modify or cancel water entry for safety. The reef listing does not guarantee visibility, wildlife sightings or operation under every condition. Pay attention to the safety briefing and tell staff before entering if you are uncomfortable in the water.

Ages, alcohol and identification

For Light, infants through age 4 are listed without charge, and the child category covers ages 5 through 11. If you choose Prime, check that option's age categories in the breakdown before paying. Bring original official photo identification to the marina ticket desk and keep it protected from spray during the journey.

Alcoholic beverages are limited to guests 18 and older. The word “premium” describes the onboard inclusion; it does not remove responsible-service rules or extend alcohol to minors. Water and other drinks support hydration, but guests should also eat, manage sun exposure and follow crew instructions.

Using free time on Isla Mujeres

The island period allows independent exploration of the center within the assigned schedule. Decide whether you prefer walking, shopping or resting, and preserve enough time to return to the specified dock. Purchases and land transportation are not included. Ask the crew exactly where and when return boarding takes place.

Avoid scheduling an independent activity that finishes close to the meeting deadline. Missing the group can remove you from its return logistics. Families should agree on a plan and keep identification and contact methods together. Prime includes its beach-club stop, while Light provides the box lunch before independent time.

What to bring aboard

Wear lightweight clothing and swimwear. Pack a towel, dry clothes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen that follows the operator's environmental rules. A compact splash-resistant bag is easier to manage than loose belongings. Choose shoes suitable for both the dock and walking in the island center.

Bring original identification and a payment method for the dock tax, parking when applicable, souvenirs and personal purchases. The dock tax is not included in the publicly displayed base price and should appear as a clear line item before payment; do not assume an amount before viewing the current breakdown. Photos and land services are separate.

Scenic Tower access and the return

Scenic Tower access is listed with both service levels, but public sources conflict on the exact period for using the benefit. Keep the ticket and follow the validity stated for the purchase. Do not arrange another vacation day around an unconfirmed number of days.

The maritime return may operate by ferry or catamaran. That flexibility does not change the excursion's overall nature, but it means the return experience can differ from the outbound sailing. Travelers who require a specific vessel because of mobility or comfort should ask before choosing.

Making the final choice

Choose Light for sailing, snorkeling, a box lunch and more emphasis on independent island time. Choose Prime for a buffet and beverages at a beach club. Then choose between making your own way to the marina and booking an option with pickup. These are separate decisions and both must be reflected in the summary.

Verify travelers, ages, identification, check-in time, meeting point and transportation before paying. Review the dock tax as a separate line. If someone will not snorkel, they can still enjoy sailing and the island, but the activity should never be represented as available contrary to its swimming and age requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a ferry ticket? No. The catamaran is an excursion with snorkeling, food, drinks and free time. A ferry is point-to-point maritime transportation.

Is the return always by catamaran? No. Operations may use either a ferry or catamaran.

Can a nonswimmer join the snorkeling? No. Swimming ability, a minimum age of 8 and use of a life jacket are required.

Is hotel pickup automatically included? Only when the selected option states that it includes transportation. Otherwise, report directly to El Embarcadero.
